It was raining hard, and the dogs were on high alert as they often are when it’s storming.

The thought of the power going out was in the back of my mind.

The gutters have been overrun, and I also thought the leaf guarding of the gutters seemed like a good thing more than ever.

Nah, not really. Just glad the sump pump is under a year old, so hopefully, if needed, it’ll do the job just fine if we take on any water at all.

I can’t imagine how scary it is with power and phone service down in the Big Easy. But, we have it good here as the reality is the power and phone service are still up and running.

As the rain once again lets up, the dogs pause to try and nap.

Last time we had more than a short outage was a few March’s ago. It was cold, and the dogs and I hunkered down until the following afternoon when the repair dude could fix the furnace.

When the forecast is foreboding, calling for ongoing rain, it always amazes me how quickly the ground gets saturated–even if it’s been scorched in the days leading up.

Anywhere you can get heavy rain is a chance for a flash flood.

The occasional thunderclaps don’t make the dogs feel any better.

Storms are the unknown, and man and beast are both in fear of them.

Football is back!

Well, it will be in a couple of weeks.

If you’re a Bears fan, there’s cause for excitement. The prospect of Justin Fields is just in time to excite the fan base.

He looked good in exhibition games which largely accounts for nothing.

That said, however, there is a renewed hope that this could be the young man that carries the Bears’ fortunes on his shoulders well into the future.

Andy Dalton is a seasoned veteran.

He also is a stopgap quarterback.

I imagine he will have a short leash.

An offense that can move the chains when needed will be a breath of fresh air, especially to the Bears’ defense.

Cardinals fading

It’s gut-check time for the St. Louis Cardinals.

They have a make-or-break series of games against teams with winning records, including the Reds, Brewers, and Dodgers.

After yesterday’s heartbreaking loss to the Pirates, it will be interesting to see if the heart of a champion remains with these Cardinals.

I would have said no before the Yankees began their recent run.

I still think the Yanks are a flawed team.

So are the Cardinals, but my point is that if the Yankees could make a run, so can the Cardinals. They are only 3.5 games behind the Reds for the final wildcard spot.

I like Teddy

The Denver Broncos named Teddy Bridgewater their starting quarterback. He was in a battle with incumbent Drew Lock.

Bridgewater is careful with the football and has just enough arm and savvy to help the Broncos take the next step towards being a team that once again is in the playoffs.

The offensive line will have to protect him for Teddy to be the most that he can be.

If the line holds up, then rain or shine, it says here the Broncos will win more games than not with Teddy at the helm.
