The dogs we are fostering have led me to understand one of the most important stories of the day. Sure, there are wars and hopes for peace. There are issues that seemingly trend one minute and fade the next. They all compete for time, space and views.
The thing these dogs have brought to the forefront for me in terms of relevancy is the topic of companionship. Many of us have had a dog provide us companionship. We have provided companionship to dogs. But watching these two brothers dote on one another has demonstrated what some of us already know as key ingredients to a successful relationship: putting the wants and interests of the other person, your significant other, ahead of your own, can typically make the person performing the unselfish acts as happy as the person receiving them.
Our doggy brother guests have taken these acts of kindness a step further, however. They are both performing unselfish acts of kindness for one another.
One of the boys had managed to free himself from his crate. Did he get into mischief? Of course, but I also found him by his brother’s side waiting for me to release his brother from his crate so they could both play together once again.
It got me to thinking of the conversation the two hounds might have had in the time Frosty had freed himself until I arrived to find him lying next to the still captive Rover.
“Frost! Hey Frost! You did it! You busted out!”
“I know, Rove, I know. It feels good to be free.”
“What are you doing? Where are you going? Come back here!”
“Don’t worry, silly. I’ll be right back. I just gotta mess with some of Bob’s stuff. You know, I gotta do some dog stuff like pull down a towel in the kitchen, stuff like that. Then, I’ll be back.”
“Oh, alright. What are you doing now?”
“Well, I just pulled the dish towel off the oven door handle and onto the kitchen floor. Now I’m going to bust the baby gate down by the stairs leading to the basement.”
“Oh shit, Frost! You know Bob doesn’t like it when we go in the basement. That’s where we saw the swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated that we wanted to tear up some, but thought better of it.”
“Don’t worry, Rove. I might look at some of the Kate Upton pics, but I’ll put it back after I’m done. Heck, I don’t think he’s even looked at it much (I haven’t. After having it in a common area for a month back in January when it first arrived, with the intention of reading it, the wife relocated it to the basement. I guess the view of the models’ barely covered behinds on the cover grew tiresome to her after a while. Can’t say I blame her.).
“What are you doing now, Frosty?”
“I’m going into the back of the basement, in the storage room. He’s got golf clubs in there. I heard him tell his wife he had a good lesson Saturday. I get the feeling Bob’s gonna suck at golf for a long, long time, Rove. I know he’s been too busy with us the past week to practice any of what he’s learned. Poor guy (I did remark to the instructor that I’d be awful for a while. She didn’t disagree. Guess you get brutal honesty when you pay in advance.).
“Frosty!” FROSTY!”
“WHAT!!?”
“What are you doing now?”
“Chew your deer antler, Rove. I’m coming back up but not before I check out a little more of the swimsuit issue.”
“I can’t believe you’re looking at more T&A when I’m still stuck in my crate. Come help me!”
“Oh alright. I’m coming. Give me a minute. I’ll be right up.”
“What took you so long?”
“Honestly? I never saw body paint used like that before. It was pretty awesome.”
“Stop it, you knucklehead. See if you can help me outta here.”
“Ok, ok. I’m trying. But the clamps on the door to yours are harder to open. I was able to pound my way out of my door. I’m trying, but I don’t think I can get it.”
“Well, thanks for trying. I’m just glad you’re back. Do you mind just laying down beside me and my crate?”
“Not at all, old buddy. I’ll just lay down here next to you until Bob gets home. He shouldn’t be much longer.”
“I love you, man.”
“I love you, too.”
